19th century Genoa and the monumental cemetery of Staglieno

The city finds new breath thanks to the building of the 19th century as the Carlo Felice Opera House on Piazza De Ferrari and the opening of new streets such as Via Roma and Via Assarotti, which link the lower city centre to the new residential areas built on the hillsides.

Spianata Castelletto, which can be reached from the Circonvallazione a Monte, offers a breathtaking view over the Old Town and the harbour. To get back to the centre you can walk along old “creuse” (narrow alleys) or use the Art Nouveau style lift.

After visiting Via Roma looking for elegant shops and boutiques, you must not miss Via XX Settembre either, a superb example of Italian Eclectism with its early 20th c. buildings.

The Cemetery of Staglieno is a true open air museum where artists from the 19th and 20th c. created rich monuments. Here it is easy to trace itineraries linked to Classicism, Romanticism, Realism and Symbolism.
